Outdoor Enthusiast’s Gear Editor Tom Hutton has already got involved by posting his must pack items. As a mountain bike guide, these are the items he packs to guide riders in remote places, such as the Scottish Highlands:
Carried in 25L Camelbak pack: 2-way radio, lightweight insulated jacket in dry bag, waterproof cover for pack, small case containing nuts/bolts/spare pedals/miscellaneous spares, sun cream, mobile phone in waterproof case (plus spare battery, credit card and £20 note), tissue in polythene bag, bloks – sugar rush if needed, waterproof jacket, map – either laminated or in waterproof case, compass, spare hat/neck warmer, spare gloves, whistle, spare spokes for my bike, shock pump, 2 x inner tubes, headlamp, hydration tablet – improves taste of water if using Micropur purification tablets to top up, gerber pliers type tool, Park Tools Bike Multi-tool, pump with 1m of duct tape wrapped round it, comprehensive first aid kit, group shelter, tool bag (mech hanger, puncture patches, tyre patches, spare chain links, emergency Kevlar spokes, zip ties, superglue, lube etc etc), drinking reservoir.
