£25 (£18) www.runderwear.co.uk
As a rule I prefer boxers, but on warm weather trips I throw any remaining dignity to the wind and opt for a pair of briefs – less damp fabric and more comfort. These are made of a practical mix of materials: 45% merino, 40% polyester ‘thermocool’, 10% polyamide and 5% elastane. The wool regulates temperature and keeps the pongs at bay, while the synthetics keep one dryer when working hard. They have worked well on both fronts and stay comfortable over long, warm-weather days. The fit is subtly but effectively contoured to the manly lumps and bumps, there’s no fly opening, and it’s a ‘seamless’ construction so there’s zero chafing to report. The brand say they stretch, but I needed to size up +1 – perhaps I’m just too used to baggy boxers. They wash well, retain their shape and have become a backpacking favourite. The price seems to be coming down from the original £25, to £18 on Runderwear’s website.
▶ Verdict: Comfortable and durable merino/synthetic brief.
▶ Best for: hiking, trekking, backpacking.
