A curved axe of moderate technicality, the Summit EVO is aimed at classical mountaineering routes and alpine adventures. It’s available in three lengths from 52cm to 66cm, with its aluminium/steel construction averaging about 425g. I have found the gentle curve of its shaft to be pitched just right, hitting the sweet spot between ease of use, practicality as a walking axe and functionality when laying into steeper ice or snow. The balancing is expertly judged, and it seems to swing with its own momentum once you begin the action. The pick is fearsomely ridged, whilst the adze is amply sized to cut steps. The grip at the bottom meanwhile, is expansive and offers great traction. It’s only a superficial touch, but I also enjoy the anodised finish on the main body, which helps distinguish the axe from the crisp snow around it very vividly – handy in low visiblity. Overall it’s the perfect choice for intermediate users and there’s no reason it shouldn’t offer decades of use.
VERDICT: An expertly built intermediate ice axe for decades of mountaineering challenges.
BEST FOR: Mountaineers.
