These are without a doubt, the best shorts I’ve ever worn. Some accolade. They’re heavy enough and warm enough to feel comfortable with a pair of liners underneath in the cooler months, yet not too warm in better weather, where the excellent ventilation in the legs, lower back and pockets also comes in handy.
The polyester fabric, which feels like lightweight softshell, is super stretchy, so it never restricts movement, either pedalling or just moving about on the bike. And it also repels a bit of rain and dries quickly, making them a good choice even on a wet day.
The fit is just fabulous – sounds like a personal thing I know but my partner has the men’s version and his fit like they were tailor-made too. I like the on-the-knee length – pretty much de-rigueur for trail and all-mountain riding these days – and the fact that there’s plenty of room for pads (and stretch if you wear more substantial protection). And the low waistband is super-comfy and printed with a rubberised section that prevents them from riding up or down. It’s easily adjusted with Velcro tabs too.
Other features include some pretty hefty pop studs at the waist and a chunky fly zip. They also have a decent array of pockets with 2 zip-opening ones at the front, a small security pocket at the back and another rear that fastens with Velcro and includes a key holder.
The colours are great – yes, I really like turquoise mtb clothing. The grey is nice too. And size-wise, they come from 8 to 16.
► Verdict: A near perfect pair of women’s mtb shorts – love them.
► Best for: Year-round wear for most styles of riding, although the aesthetics are definitely more trail/all-mountain/enduro.
