We’re into the realm of high spec trail running here, and these, while not being the perfect fit for me personally, are exceptionally well designed and fit for that purpose. The heart of the beast is the very sticky sole, using FriXion XF, with deep lugs that clung to the ground and refused to let go. Compared to most here, the heel is low drop but there’s a nice chunky rocker mid sole to keep you bouncing along like a technical Tigger. In common with most purpose built fell runners these are non-GTX – which means that they will wet out quickly, but dry fast too. Extra innovation comes in the form of the wraparound tongue with built in gaiter, which reduces grit inside the shoe and means a very snug and stable fit while moving over uneven ground. La Sportiva’s Ultra Raptor shoe is my personal footwear of choice for big backpacking miles in 3 seasons, but these came very close to stealing that crown. However, the fit is a little tighter on the forefoot with the Mutant’s, which seems to works best as a running shoe. In that role, the Mutant is superb. Weight per shoe 303g.
