Made from 260gsm luxury Merino with a touch of Lycra, this is warm next to skin. Icebreaker have worked to resolve the moisture management problems of wool by inserting body-mapped panels of lighter 230g Merino on the back and at the sides. The latter have pores to assist the movement of water vapour away from the skin. It works, up to a point, but for me this is still a low-moderate intensity thermal base layer, and wouldn’t be my first choice for a sweaty hike in wet weather. It’s hard wearing, doesn’t smell even after days of use, which suits trekking in cool climates.
VERDICT: A technical take on Merino, with improved moisture management properties.
BEST FOR: Cold weather trekking, winter sports.
