It’s not the budget option, but the Roc Spirit is a marvelous compromise of performance and weight. Made with Gore-Tex, C-Knit backer technology, more breathable than traditional Gore, it feels exceptionally comfortable in muggy or damp climates. Aside from the high-tech fabric, this jacket is the essence of simple things done well. I love the two roomy waterproof external pockets and the easy to operate underarm zips. As for the hood, well, it’s a proper winterised hood, of the sort that gives a decent amount of protection even when wearing a helmet. Because I’m a ponytail wearer, I like this sort of hood even without a helmet, but it does cinch down neatly too. Weight is a burly 420g (my scales) but that’s pretty lightweight for a full mountain hardshell.
VERDICT: A mountaineering waterproof for all weathers.
BEST FOR: Hiding in when things get a bit grim.
