I’ve used these overtrousers for many years, so it’s great to feature them here. The fabric is (as you’d guess) Goretex Paclite, which seems to me a practical balance between weight, breathability and durability. The waist is elasticated with a drawcord, and critically there are ¾ length, 2-way zips on each leg, which mean they are easy to put on and take off without removing shoes. With a little care, this can also be done wearing winter boots and crampons. Snap-buttons clasp the fabric together at knee and ankle and mean the trouser can be unzipped to ventilate at the thigh or calf if the weather starts to improve. After a few hours in really foul conditions the knees will start to wet through just a little, but mine have lasted years, and I’ve seen other overtrousers disintegrate after just a few days use. Make sure you size up to wear over other kit. Weight around 240g, women’s fit available.
▶ Verdict: A solid overtrouser with the right mix of waterproofness, breathability and durability.
▶ Best for: hiking, backpacking and trekking everywhere from dale to alp.
