Berghaus Explorer Active shoe – Best Buy

I’ve worn these understated trail shoes a ton over spring and summer and grown to really like them. For me, they are the best generalists here – equally at home on my local run, on the bike, and on the hill, which is why they easily steal our Best Buy award. The fit is relaxed and comfortable, with a tidy heel cup and roomy toe box – so no heel rise and no bruised toes, even on loose scree and talus up in the Scottish Highlands. The sole is grippy Vibram, which has not slipped once on all manner of terrain, and the Goretex surround (of which I am usually highly sceptical) has proven to be the most water-resistant and breathable of any of the liner equipped shoes on this test. The ortholite footbed and EVA midsole means these are comfortable all day long. These shoes don’t shout at you with fluorescent colours and flashy design, but they are high performers. I just wish they made a non-GTX version – then my search for the perfect 3 season outdoor shoe would be over. Weight per shoe 425g
