Grizzly bear fighting former prison guard turned mountaineer Nick Bullock will recount his worldwide adventures at the Buxton Adventure Festival on 23rd March.
As one of the most outspoken climbers of his generation, Nick will pair his usual dry wit and humour with stunning photography, exciting films clips and a feature of his ascent of the Rive Gauche above the Argentiere Glacier in Chamonix.
The UK premiering talk, titled It Takes a Big Dog, will span his many adventures exploring the world’s mountains and cliffs. Nick will also talk about an incident that sparked international headlines at the end of 2015, when he and climbing partner Greg Boswell narrowly fought off a grizzly bear attack in the Canadian Rockies.
The talk will take place at 7:30pm on Wednesday, March 23rd 2016, at the Pavilion Arts Centre in Buxton, in the heart of the Peak District. The event is supported by University of Derby, Buxton Opera House, Buxton Advertiser, The Old Hall Hotel, Go Ape, and Heason Events.
Nick will be joined by support speaker and fanatical cyclist Dave Barter. Dave is the author of Amazon worldwide bestseller Obsessive Compulsive Cycling Disorder and road cycling guidebook Great British Bike Rides.
He is a veteran of numerous races and sportives, including L’Étape du Tour, the Fausto Coppi, the Polka Dot Challenge, two successful Land’s End to John O’Groats expeditions, and the Highland Trail 550, among others.
Alongside his own achievements, Dave will talk about his mission to resurrect the memory of twentieth century legend Tommy Godwin, who in 1939, set the momentous year cycling distance record of 75,065 miles, an average of 205 miles a day.
Matt Heason, Buxton Adventure Festival Director, says: “We’re mixing it up for the March instalment of the Buxton Adventure Festival. Firstly, we have one of mountaineering’s most outspoken voices in Nick Bullock, and then we’ve got fanatical cycling aficionado Dave Barter. They’re both incredibly passionate, amazing public speakers and coming armed with stunning photography, videos and stories to tell. It’s an evening not to be missed.”
The evening will also feature an adrenaline fuelled film and an audiovisual presentation will be delivered by Daniel Wildey, an adventure and travel photographer based in the Peak District.
Further Buxton Adventure Festival events are taking place throughout the year, with speakers including:
