Saalbach Hinterglemm is the ideal base for exploring the surrounding mountains, between the gentle hills of the Pinzgau Grass Mountains and the rugged peaks of the surrounding Stone Mountains. The most “lässig” of Austria’s mountain villages is no longer exclusively known as a top skiing destination, but is also treasured by outdoor enthusiasts as an Eldorado for hiking and is – together with Saalfelden Leogang and Fieberbrunn – Austria’s biggest bike resort.
Summits for every taste
400km of marked hiking trails are waiting to be discovered. With routes available at all levels, both athletic mountaineers as well as more laid-back amateur hikers will find hiking trails to their liking.
A real highlight for skilled summiteers is the “Seven Summits of Saalbach Hinterglemm” tour. Nine hours of walking, 24km of hiking and 1,413m of elevation create a real mountaineering challenge. The route consistently extends past the 2000er limit and offers magnificent views.
Another long-distance hike is the “Home of Lässig Walk”. It is long, rich in splendid views every step along the way and just incredibly “lässig”! With around 1,700m of elevation, five summits and around 22km, the “Home of Lässig Walk” leads right into a real natural spectacle. The Hinterglemm valley head is an ideal retreat for hikers — far from all the lifts and cycling trails. Though the route does include a few summits that are especially popular with the locals, the U-shaped tour in the valley basin provides plenty of peace and even a few completely solitary moments. This is the world of the chamois, marmots and deer. Even a few golden eagles can be spotted occasionally, hunting for prey above the rugged cliffs.
The Saalbach Hiking Challenge
Three long-distance hiking trails — one challenge. With a total of 64km and 3,800m of uphill elevation, the Saalbach Hiking Challenge is a new adventure for physically fit mountain hikers. Those who conquer the 28km and 650m of elevation of the long-distance hiking classic “Pinzgau Walk”, the “Seven Summits” and the “Home of Lässig Walk” can look forward to a personal trophy.
Austria’s largest bike resort
Looking for flowy lines for beginners that include optional features for more expert riders? Or is it lightning fast downhill tracks with huge jumps you’re after? How about a rowdy, technical and natural single track to change things up? Thanks to the region’s bike network of over 70km of trails, including several beginner areas and pump tracks, beginners can easily and safely progress, while advanced riders will be spoilt for choice when it comes to identifying their new favourite trail.
The only limit to the huge network of marked mountain bike trails in Austria’s biggest bike resort is a rider’s fitness. Whether it’s a chilled joyride with an E-Bike or a challenging mountain bike marathon – every rider will find the perfect tour for his or her individual fitness level. The region, which is famous for its outdoor recreation and scenic views, definitely deserves its reputation as a below-the-radar destination for extended bike tours with and without electric support. The choice of mapped-out tours range from gentle shady paths all the way to extensive climbs on challenging peaks.
* cool and laid back. Or “lässig” as the Austrian’s say.
