Another purifier in the round up, which means it should eliminate viruses as well as particulate bugs. The Steripen was one of the original UV water treatments, and the Adventurer Opti is small, lightweight and packable – about the size of a small kitchen knife. It’ll purify about 25 litres of water on a single set of batteries. You stick the ‘pen’ end in a bottle (not supplied) and hit the switch and stir. Lamp life is estimated about 8,000 cycles and it comes with a small, belt mountable pouch. For cloudy water, you’ll need to pre-filter sediment – many do that through a buff or muslin cloth. It’s a compact and lightweight solution, but note that CR123 batteries are needed. These can be harder to source than AA’s or AAA’s, so bear that in mind if you are travelling for a long time, and pack spares.
VERDICT: Small and comprehensive virus killer. Tried and true but watch battery availability.
BEST FOR: Backpacking in Asia or the US.
