The funky tree print shown here is called Thunder Star Print Deep Navy, and is instantly appealing, and these are a curious crossbreed, combining both fleecy warmth underneath and a much thinner, breathable fabric on top. The sock is a shorter, crew length, and we get another natural synthetic blend: 60% Merino Wool, 37% Nylon, 2% Elastane, 1% Polyester. The shaping in the arch and a flat knit seam in the toe make for an almost invisible fit. Possibly the highest plaudit I can give to a piece of clothing is that I forget I’m wearing it, and in certain conditions that’s exactly what happens here. For cooler weather walking they are perfect, and that brushed wool undersole is really cosy, but in warmer conditions – when running, or if it’s wet underfoot, the heavier pile is too warm or wets out and stays wet.
▶ Verdict: A touch of luxury underfoot in cooler conditions, but too warm for summer.
▶ Best for: Cooler day trips in shoes or boots that are lined, and/or waterproof.
