These have been around for a while – indeed my own pair I’ve had for a couple of years at least – and they represent amazing value for money in my view, especially at the sale price.
The repel have a very loose and baggy leg, but are fitted at the waist. That waist is quite high, to stop the shorts moving around too much whilst on the bike, and has a built-in belt (elastic and Velcro) to keep it cinched in place. There are double poppers at the top of the front zip, another pressure point when in a riding position. The grey fabric in the seat has a good amount of four way stretch, and the black is a tougher, more abrasion resistant nylon which sheds water really, really well despite not being officially waterproof. The DWR on my pair seems to have survived well and still works.
The leg pockets are Velcro fastened but are deep enough that stuff stays in them, and there’s an additional zippered security pocket on the right leg for keys and money and the like. The blue highlights on the thighs are zippered vents, which allow you to spill heat through the mesh underneath when working hard. Overall, these are excellent all-rounders. I use them in all seasons: in the summer with a thin bike liner underneath, and in winter paired with leggings and a thicker liner. Most of the time I seem to be able to get away without a pair of waterproof overtrousers.
► Verdict: Great value, robust and well designed, with a very effective DWR.
► Best for: General purpose mountain biking and off road touring and bikepacking.
