A synthetic jacket using ‘PlumaFill’, this seemed so light as to defy any claims of cosiness, but I have to say I was proved wrong. The Micro Puff lofts like only high quality down does, and packs just as small. The Pertex Quantum outer is very light and doesn’t offer a great deal of moisture shrugging ability, but conversely, it’s very breathable and doesn’t take long to dry either. There are two zippered handwarmer pockets and two internal pockets useful for drying gloves or socks, plus an elasticated cuffs and waist. Sadly, mine didn’t come with a hood – just a high collar – but Patagonia do make a hoody version. Even so, I’ve used this last winter as part of a modular (2 jacket) setup and it kept me warm, and dried quickly from both condensation and snow – quite incredible performance for a weight of about 240g.
► Verdict: All puff and no fluff – ultra light, warm and breathable, no extras.
► Best for: Posing at a mountain film festival, or backpacking or climbing where weight matters.
