Hybrid jackets – a mix of insulation and fleece – seem to divide opinion a bit like marmite, but while I do like to keep things simple, I’m also a marmite fan. The insulation is PrimaLoft ‘Thermoplume’, a relatively new synthetic which sets out to mimic down in its air-capturing ability, and it’s combined with a strip of fleece that runs from either side of the torso flank up to the backs of each arm. It’s designed to be a versatile and well-articulated body warmer, which can work equally well as a mid under a shell or as a stand-alone outer when you need more breathability. What else? Reasonably sized handwarmer pockets (not very accessible under a harness or hipbelt), an internal breast pocket, all with practical zip pulls, a 1 way main zip and (I’m always pleased to see) a hem popper to prolong zip life, plus a rear baffle to cut drafts. The sleeves are simple elastic, and the hood is good; basic and stretchy but it works well to provide extra warmth. I’ve found this to do exactly what it sets out to do – be a practical mid/outer in a wide range of conditions that’s resistant to some abuse. As a result I’ve worn it almost everyday since autumn, and it’s still doing that job brilliantly. Kudos, Montane. Weight around 530g
