With its stretchy, wind-resistant outer and pile-like inner, the Alpine Equaliser feels a real treat to wear from the off. Offering a typically athletic Montane fit, there’s a host of pleasing details and features to enjoy: The wrists have hook and loop adjusters, the hand pockets and chest pocket are roomy enough for map, snack or tools, the adjustable, wired hood is comfy and enveloping without in any way limiting vision, and there are cinches at the hem too. The very tactile outer fabric is Wind Barrier Dynamic (a stretchy nylon) whilst the microfleece lining is Thermo Plexus, both of which performed as promised during my testing – proving ideal for use as a cool-weather midlayer on foot or bike, able to repel wind, trap manageable amounts of warmth and vent sweat with ease. Amongst all the excellence of this jacket it’s probably the hood which impressed me the most, inside of which it’s easy to feel safe and warm in cool and windy conditions. It weighs 458g (small) and the price is great, given the quality.
VERDICT: A very versatile mid or outer layer for sweatier activities.
BEST FOR: Cool weather, high intensity pursuits.
