Autumn 2017 sees Montane expanding their range of waterproof jackets as they continue their partnership with Gore. The Ajax has zoned areas of 40 and 70 denier three-layer Gore-Tex, with maximum durability where it is needed most- around the shoulders and hood. Everything about this jacket feels tough, if a little stiff. I’m a big fan of the hood – which will just about fit over a helmet, but more to the point gives good protection the rest of the time, fitting closely, and with a firm wired brim. Three spacious waterproof pockets grace the exterior. Apart from that, it’s very simple, which keeps the weight under 400g (my scales).
VERDICT: A tough Gore-Tex mountaineering shell.
BEST FOR: Year round use and winter adventures especially.
