What a versatile piece of kit this jacket is. It’s unbelievably light – not much over 200g for the size 8, and packs so small that it will actually go in a jersey pocket if you’re riding without a pack.
The award-winning P4DRY fabric has a hydrostatic head of 20,000mm, which basically means it’s very waterproof, with a seriously effective DWR which does a great job of shedding water. It also has fully-taped seams – something usually found in hardshell waterproof jackets. The downside of all this is that it is sweatier than a non-waterproof softshell. But that’s the price you pay for all the versatility.
It does have some useful underarm venting though, and the pockets are mesh-lined so help to spill heat too.
The hood fits easily over helmet – aided in no small part by the ultra-stretchy fabric – yet folds away when not needed to keep it looking neat and to prevent it from flapping about in the wind. It will also fit under a helmet if you prefer.
The hem is easily adjustable via a draw cord, but the cuffs are just elasticated so check they pull up over the elbows – I found them incredibly tight. So tight in fact, I have to wear my pads outside of the jacket – this is probably my only complaint.
Again, I love the colours, Madison are definitely getting the aesthetics right. And the fit, apart from the sleeves, is absolutely perfect. Other cool features include printed silicone patches on the shoulders to hold your pack steady.
► Verdict: A warm and comfortable lightweight waterproof, or a softshell that will allow you to leave the waterproof behind. A very versatile jacket indeed.
► Best for: This could be the only jacket you need for 3-season MTB use.
