This is the 3 season, synthetic version of Exped’s popular down mats (for winter use). The R-value is 3.3, with insulation laminated to both top and bottom inside, which should improve its durability. Exped cleverly avoid the problem of warm breath condensing inside the mat (which could lead to mould) by including a lightweight ‘pumpbag’, with which you grab air and push into the mat. I found it took only two or three bags worth to inflate, although you do need more elbow room to do so. There are two valves, the inflation one being one way as opposed to the more usual two way. This prevents air escaping when you pause to grab more air with the pump. It’s a wide, warm and very comfortable mat to sleep on, with chunky baffles that run head to toe. It packs slightly smaller than the others here, to around the size of a 500ml bottle, and weighs 450g.

VERDICT: Excellent design and build quality. Also very comfortable.

BEST FOR: 3 season backpacking and mountaineering.
