Polartec Alpha straddles the fence between fleece and lofting insulation. It’s actually a fine woven mesh, with lots of spaces to trap warm air, a bit like a string vest. A wind resistant shell helps keep the warm air in place. The Elevation uses this technology in body-mapped zones (front and shoulders), to maximise insulation where it is needed, and dumping heat where it isn’t. It’s a superb piece of kit for running, ski touring, or just moving fast in cold environments. The shell is abrasion resistant and super-stretchy with thumb loops, hand warmer pockets and a light hood.
VERDICT: Specialist, clever insulation.
BEST FOR: Dynafit have positioned this jacket as a “speed mountaineering” garment, and while it is a bit niche, I think it’s great for running and mountain biking too.
