Arc’teryx has a reputation for making superb outdoor gear for high end prices. The Alpha FL – official garment of the British Mountain Guides – fits into this mould exactly. And yet that £320 price tag, whilst high, becomes easier to justify once you look at the wealth of features, the quality of the build and the durability of the fabric you’re buying. In fact, apart from the slight hesitation at the price tag, I can’t fault this jacket. It really is that good. The N40p-X / Gore-Tex Pro fabric is impeccably waterpoof, highly breathable and even incorporates a small amount of stretch in use, the single outer and single inner pocket aren’t obstructed by rucksack hipbelts (or a harness). The zips and cinches at the hem and hood are sturdy and easy to operate (I particularly love the outer pulls for the hood which emerge from the jacket at the neck – they’re easy to find and operate even with gloves hands), and if you ever go climbing or to the alps you’ll appreciate the long cut and helmet-compatible hood too. And all at 315g!
VERDICT: Find the the money and buy one. At this price it’s the best out there.
BEST FOR: Mountain lovers.
