In a nutshell – stretchy, lightweight and comfortable. They come to just above the knee and have low profile elastic at the waist to sit nicely under rucksack straps. There’s beltloops too, but in common with other clothing from the brand the fit is on the slim side, so I’ve not needed a belt! The TecWeave fabric is stretchy enough to accommodate the odd extra pie though, moves with me and is thin enough to dry fast. It also incorporates a light DWR to resist the odd shower. There are three pockets, all of which are thankfully zippered, with handy drawcords. All of these are mesh rather than fabric lined, improving ventilation and making these a good option for warmer weather or European summer hiking. I usually use running shorts for summer backpacks, but I like that these are smarter – perhaps for evening use as well – and are lightweight enough to carry if needs be. If you are used to thinking of Sprayway as a bit of a budget brand, think again – these are well specified and highly functional. Weight 200g on my scales.
► Verdict: Smart, comfortable, lightweight and well designed.
► Best for: Warm weather hiking and backpacking.
