The 650g Chonos is a traditional winter down jacket – stuffed full of plenty of feathers and intended to keep you warm in the coldest of conditions. It succeeds completely – with the 250g of 800-fill goose down expanding amply within its box wall construction to create a snug and expansive jacket perfect for high camps or cold or stationary vigils. It comes with a stuffsack, but can be knuckled into a 2litre alternative too – making it relatively portable. The warm and enveloping helmet-compatible hood is superbly adjustable, using two front cinches and a rear hook and loop patch to pull tight to exactly the spot occupied by your eyes – leaving vision unrestricted and movement only slightly limited. That hood can be rolled and stowed, the hem is quick to tighten effectively, the elasticated wrists are ideal and there are two sizeable hand pockets (although storage is not the jacket’s strong point). The outer Pertex Quantum has a DWR coating to offer light water repellency, but not proofing. However, at this weight and with this much glorious insulation the Chonos is a top-rated down jacket.
