A beautifully comfortable hardshell with the emphasis on ‘soft’. Despite the slightly misleading name, the fabric here is not NeoShell, but Dermizax NX, a luxurious fabric geared towards skiers, snowboarders and others who are likely to wear their jacket all day, rather than just in the rain. The manufacturers reckon it’s more breathable than Gore-tex, and I’d go along with that, although the extra weight and bulk here does counteract the claim a little. That won’t matter in the deep cold on or off-piste, where this jacket is best placed. I’ve certainly had no issue at all with the waterproofness – it seems positively hydrophobic. There’s a detachable, non wired hood, which I struggled to keep in place without a helmet underneath, deep meshed chest pockets for ventilation and ample storage, pitzips and smaller gadget pockets both inside and out. Tapered sleeves and wonderfully comfortable to wear, this is a little heavy at 740g.
VERDICT: An interesting fabric, and a beautifully made jacket.
BEST FOR: Worth a closer look if you are skiing and snowboarding, perhaps less useful for hiking or climbing.
