Seven people were killed when a rock fell on boats on a lake in Brazil

The crash happened at 11:00 a.m. local time (2:00 pm on Portugal ‘mainland) on Lake Furnace, a tourist attraction in the municipality of Capitolio, when a large stone barrier fell on three boats from a height of five meters.

Nine of the injured have been admitted to hospital, with firefighters, various equipment and a team of divers intervening at the scene. The search was halted overnight for security reasons and resumed the next day.

Firefighters have blamed heavy rains for the past few days in southeastern Brazil for the crash.

Capitolio, about 280 km from Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais (southeast), is a year-round tourist destination for its impressive valleys.
