The dead Gala It’s fashion night out—and celebrities are known for providing their most eye-catching outfits to their often theatrical red carpet.
The pandemic-related rescheduling means it’s been less than eight months since the stars descended on the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the (usually) annual fundraiser, giving designers less time to think about the event. At the gallery’s pre-party press event, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden delivered opening remarks at the Met, emphasizing the “rich and profound” history of American design.

“It is a story of innovation, creativity, rebellion and renewal,” she said. “Often written by those in the shadows, their influence and art are not recognized, but here at the Met their stories are told. Their voices rise and their works can shine.”

Before the Monday evening red carpet, one of the quintessential American designers, Tommy Hilfigerwhose work appears on the show, told CNN that the event provided designers with an opportunity “to showcase their unique interpretations of fashion and popular culture.

“I always look forward to seeing how designers interpret the topic with their creativity, identity and evolution, and I am sure this year will be no exception,” Hilfiger said by email. “The Met Gala is all about having an open mind and thinking outside the box.”

For former Yeezy designer Maisie Schloss, who now runs her own label in Los Angeles Maisie WillenThe fundraising mix of haute couture and mainstream appeal makes it a “unique” red carpet, he said.

“Events embraced by industry insiders and audiences alike allow for a peak of creativity,” she said by email, adding, “I hope guests bring out their most decadent and playful looks.”
