Kyiv prohibits the use of Russian in cultural and entertainment venues

NoAt a meeting on July 13, municipal representatives adopted a decision to ban public use of Russian-language entertainment products, Kyiv’s municipality said, as quoted by Ukrainian independent newspaper Euromaidan today.

The decision bans the public exhibition of Russian-language “cultural products,” including music, shows, concerts, books, artworks and audiovisual works, handicrafts, cultural and educational services.

“It is necessary to protect the Ukrainian information space from the hybrid influences of the occupying state trying to destroy the Ukrainian national identity, culture, traditions, customs and historical memory. Russia has no place in the heart of our capital”, Vadim Vasilchuk, head of the Standing Committee on Education, Science, Youth and Sports, was quoted by the same publication.

Vasylchuk added that material and spiritual artifacts of artistic, historical, ethnological and scientific importance will also be banned and must be stored, reproduced and preserved in accordance with Ukrainian law.

On the same day, the Kyiv City Council approved a decision to remove or move 69 monuments, monuments and decorative elements associated with the former Soviet Union or Russia.

In November last year, the Kyiv Chamber completely excluded the teaching of Russian as part of the curriculum of municipal institutions in pre-school and general secondary education.

Kyiv was one of the cities hardest hit by Russian airstrikes after a military invasion of Moscow troops in Ukraine on February 24 last year, widely condemned by the international community and justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Denazify” and militarize the Ukrainian regime for Russia’s protection.
