“Influencer” Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison for “Innuendo and Immoral Movements”

Al Shimi “admitted” to publishing content with “innovations and movements” to “increase the number of followers,” according to public ministry investigations.

Two weeks ago, an Egyptian judge decided to detain the model after she was detained at Cairo’s international airport.

The Economic Court of Alexandria condemned Salma Al Shimi this Tuesday, reports Efe.

The 29-year-old model has been condemned for “violating the values and principles” of Egyptian society and for “offending the public” with her posts on Instagram and TikTok, where she has nearly a million followers on each of these social networks. .

Egypt’s public ministry initially accused the “influencer” of creating content that “incites immorality and arouses sexual instincts”.

Al Shimi had already sparked a major controversy in 2020 when he was briefly detained in the archaeological zone of Saqqara, southwest of Cairo, after posing as a pharaoh and posting photos to his social media without proper authorization, authorities said at the time.

In recent years, many young women have been arrested in Egypt for “inappropriate” use of social media, while being accused of “promoting fraud” or outright prostitution or human trafficking.

Several Egyptian “influencers” are currently in prison on these charges, which local and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) find “deeply troubling” and another example of the lack of freedom of expression in Egypt.
