“Frenzy”. The tomb of Putin’s parents faces the prison

UA 60-year-old woman has been jailed for three years for placing a “disgraceful inscription” on the grave of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s parents.

The woman was charged by St. Petersburg authorities under the law on desecration of corpses and burial sites, according to the Reuters news agency, citing the organization for the protection of civil rights OVD-Information.

The case dates back to October 2022, when Irina Sibaneva placed a note on the graves of Vladimir and Maria Putin, saying that they were “the parents of a maniac” and that “the whole world is praying for his death.” “Death to Putin, they created a variant and a murderer,” it said.

Sibaneva was arrested in October and placed under house arrest after criminal proceedings were opened against him. Already this Wednesday, a prosecutor in St. Petersburg asked for a three-year prison sentence for the woman.

According to Reuters, the woman admitted to writing the note and said she wrote it after watching the news about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, “because it’s so scary and sad and so many people have died”.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia began, according to Vladimir Putin, with the aim of “destroying” and militarizing Ukraine for Russia’s protection. The move was widely condemned by the international community.

The UN confirmed that more than 8,000 civilians died and 15,000 were injured in the fighting, although the actual numbers are likely much higher and can only be known during access to fenced areas or heavy fighting.
