Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay was furious after the season ended with his team losing the playoffs. Those bitter feelings still lingered, and it’s clear from Irsai’s comments that a change had to be made for midfielder Carson Wentz.
Speaking Tuesday from the NFL’s annual meeting in Palm Beach, Florida, Irsay spoke at length about the reasons behind QB’s trading after one season.
Irsay said, “I think the worst thing you can do is make a mistake and try to continue living with it in the future,” Via IndyStar. “For us, it was something we had to walk away from as a privilege. It was very clear.”
Irsay referred to the season-ending loss to the Jaguars, who won three, as the last straw. The 26-11 defeat that kept the Colts out of the playoffs was a sad thing that was nowhere near the end result.
“There’s no disrespect for Jacksonville, but I mean, they’re the worst team in the league. You play really well and tough in the first quarter or so, and they’re looking to go to their locker room and clean it up. I’ve never seen anything like that,” Airsi said. in my life”. “She says, ‘Oh my God, there’s something wrong here. It needs to be corrected. I think we feel like we did.’”
Irsay apparently blamed Wentz for the team’s inability to live up to the occasion.
“Your man should take you and carry you through Jacksonville,” said Irsay. “He has to do it. It’s not an option. He has to. No excuses, no explanations.”
Irsai’s somber view of Wentz had less to do with the struggles of his midfielders on the field – although that was certainly a highlight throughout the season in which QB threw less than 230 yards in each of his last five games. For Irsay, Wentz lacked the driving into the locker room that an owner would like.
“You’re looking for the right chemistry with any team,” Ersay said. “In football, a sport is just as important as its presence. If that chemistry is stopped, and if it doesn’t exist, it can be very detrimental and underperform to an amazing and shocking degree.”
Irsay added, “For us, the fit just wasn’t a good fit. I don’t know why. Often times you don’t know why, but you know it isn’t, and it was important for us to go in a different direction.”
Through deeds and words, Irsay blamed the disappointing season at Wentz’s foot. Big changes were promised after the season collapsed, but the only major change the Colts made was in the middle. Both coach and GM are back.
In the end, Indy found a receiver for Wentz and somehow convinced Washington to send a third-round pick and a conditional extra third to return to the midfield that seemed likely the Colts would cut him.
“I think it was really very cool and a big salute to Chris, for generating strong business interest and closing the deal with Washington,” Irsay said. “I don’t lose sight of the fact that it was a huge blessing from the football gods, where we were and where we could be if things didn’t come to that level. You end up cutting Carson, and we get nothing.”
