Finnish citizens are invited to vote this Sunday in the country’s legislative elections. 200 seats in Parliament are at stake for a four-year term. Finland is headed by Prime Minister Sanna Marin.
When elected in 2019, Marin was 34 years old and became the youngest Chief Executive. He is now seen as a progressive leader around the world, but his economic policies have been criticized by the opposition. Over the past year, his personal life has also come under public scrutiny.
Sanna Marin’s coalition faces challenges to stay in power, with three parties emerging with similar values in the polls. According to ‘The Guardian’, a poll by the public broadcaster Yle (which has a difference of two percentage points), puts the National Alliance party in the lead in the race with 19.8%, followed by the far-right Finns Party with 19.5%. The Social Democrats, allied with Marin, received 18.7% support.
On Friday, Finland’s entry into NATO received the green light from the Turkish parliament, which unanimously approved the country’s membership, making it the last member of the Atlantic alliance.
