Doncaster Sheffield Airport has committed £7 million to a new radar system as preparations continue for its planned reopening in April 2028. The investment has been described as the largest capital cost of the reopening programme so far and represents a significant step towards restoring passenger and freight operations at the South Yorkshire airport.

Technology group Raytheon UK is due to install the new radar equipment in 2027, using technology supplied by RTX, which provides air traffic systems to facilities across 45 countries.
The £7 million agreement is intended to provide essential infrastructure for managing aircraft movements safely and efficiently once Doncaster Sheffield Airport, commonly known as DSA, resumes operations.
Simon Hinchley, executive director for airport operations at site operator FlyDoncaster, described the order as one of the most important developments in the airport’s revival.
“Placing this significant order is arguably the most important step in reopening the airport to date and speaks volumes about the intent and sense of direction,” he said.
Radar system to support safe airport operations
Radar and air traffic management equipment will form a crucial part of DSA’s operational infrastructure, allowing air traffic teams to monitor and manage aircraft arriving at and departing from the airport.
Kevin Hobson, director and general manager of services at Raytheon UK, said the investment would play an important role in preparing the site for its return to service.
“This is a critical investment in airport infrastructure that will help deliver safe, efficient and reliable operations,” he said.
The radar announcement follows a series of measures aimed at rebuilding the airport’s operational capabilities.
In July, DSA announced a number of new appointments to its Air Traffic Services team as it works to establish the workforce required ahead of reopening.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed in 2022 after its then owners concluded that the site was not financially viable.
City of Doncaster Council has since been working to revive the airport, with a target of fully reopening it to passenger and freight traffic in April 2028.
More than 80 people are currently employed at the site, with teams working across a range of areas required to bring the airport back into commercial operation.
The reopening project is being backed by City of Doncaster Council and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, reflecting wider efforts to improve transport infrastructure and economic opportunities across the region.
Consultation considers aircraft noise and flight routes
Preparations have also included consultation with communities over potential noise associated with future aircraft movements.
The process is examining possible arrival and departure routes that could be used once flights resume. Aircraft noise is expected to remain an important consideration as the airport develops its future operating arrangements.
The consultation forms part of the wider technical and regulatory work required before commercial flights can return to the site.
Airport revival expected to support South Yorkshire economy
Supporters of the reopening argue that Doncaster Sheffield Airport could become an important economic asset for South Yorkshire and the wider North of England.
The airport is expected to generate around £5 billion for the regional economy by 2050, according to projections associated with the reopening programme.
Restoring passenger services could improve air connectivity for communities across South Yorkshire, while renewed freight operations are expected to provide additional opportunities for businesses and logistics companies.
The airport’s location also places it within reach of major population and commercial centres including Doncaster, Sheffield and surrounding parts of Yorkshire and the East Midlands.
