The Buttermarket shopping centre in Ipswich has temporarily closed for the second time in less than a month after a problem involving a tempered glass panel prompted fresh safety measures.
The town-centre complex announced the closure on Monday night following a failure involving a glass panel in its north mall. Barriers have been placed across the entrance while the site remains shut.
Glass Panel Failure Prompts Temporary Closure
The Buttermarket said the latest closure was necessary after the tempered glass panel failed in part of the shopping centre.
Management said the centre would reopen “as soon as safety measures are in place” and apologised to visitors for any inconvenience caused.
No timetable for reopening was immediately confirmed, with access expected to remain restricted while the necessary safety arrangements are completed.
Tempered glass, also known as toughened glass in the UK, is commonly used in commercial buildings because it is designed to provide greater strength and improved safety compared with standard glass.
Second Disruption in Less Than a Month
The latest incident comes only weeks after the Buttermarket was forced to close following a separate infrastructure problem.
At the end of August, the shopping centre shut for several days because of a burst water main. The incident disrupted access to the complex before it was able to reopen.
The two closures have occurred within less than a month, bringing another period of disruption for businesses and visitors using the Ipswich town-centre site.
Buttermarket to Reopen After Safety Measures
Located in central Ipswich, the Buttermarket forms part of the Suffolk town’s retail and leisure offering. Its temporary closure means shoppers and other visitors will have to wait until safety measures are completed before returning to the centre.
Management has not indicated that the latest closure is connected to the burst water main that caused the previous shutdown.
For now, the Buttermarket remains closed, with the centre saying it intends to reopen as soon as the required safety measures are in place.
