August Total Solar Eclipse to Cross Spain, Iceland and Greenland in Rare Celestial Event

A Rare Astronomical Display Will Bring Daytime Darkness to Parts of Europe

Skywatchers across Europe are preparing for one of the most remarkable astronomical events of the decade as a total solar eclipse sweeps across parts of Spain, Iceland and Greenland on 12 August. The event will be particularly significant for mainland Spain, which has not experienced a full solar eclipse in more than a century and is set to enjoy another, even longer eclipse in 2027.

The spectacle will be accompanied by a series of other celestial highlights, including a six-planet alignment before dawn and the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower after sunset, making it an exceptional day for astronomy enthusiasts.

Where the Total Solar Eclipse Will Be Visible

The eclipse will begin near the North Pole before tracing a 5,130-mile (8,260-kilometre) path southwards, with the Moon’s shadow crossing mostly over the Atlantic Ocean before reaching Greenland, Iceland, Portugal, Spain and finally the Mediterranean.

Maximum totality of two minutes and 18 seconds will occur off Iceland’s western coast. By the time the eclipse reaches mainland Spain, the period of complete darkness will have reduced to approximately one minute, taking place shortly before sunset across the Iberian Peninsula.

For the UK, the eclipse will be visible as a partial solar eclipse, although those travelling to northern Spain will have the opportunity to witness totality.

Millions Across Europe Will Experience a Partial Eclipse

While only a narrow corridor will experience complete darkness, hundreds of millions of people will still witness a partial eclipse.

The event will also be visible across much of Europe, Canada, the northern United States, West Africa, Alaska and parts of Siberia.

Cities closer to the path of totality will see a greater proportion of the Sun obscured. Dublin is expected to experience around 94% coverage, while Oslo will see approximately 83%. Further west, Montreal will witness an 18% eclipse, compared with 9% in New York and around 2% in Norfolk, Virginia.

Astronomers stress that certified solar eclipse glasses are essential for safely viewing every stage of the eclipse unless observing during the brief period of totality.

Planet Parade and Perseid Meteor Shower Add to the Spectacle

The eclipse will be only one part of an extraordinary day for skywatchers.

Before sunrise, six planets will appear aligned across the morning sky, while after darkness falls the annual Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak under the favourable conditions of a new Moon. Bright meteors may even become visible during totality alongside stars and planets that briefly emerge in the darkened daytime sky.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler hopes to witness another rare phenomenon during the event.

For his 13th total solar eclipse, Zeiler will be aboard a cruise ship sailing through a Greenland fjord, where he plans to monitor the northern horizon in the hope of capturing the aurora borealis.

“What gets me excited is viewing rare phenomena,” Zeiler said in an email.

Scientists Prepare Major Research Campaigns

Space agencies and research institutions are planning extensive scientific observations throughout the eclipse.

The European Space Agency (ESA) will broadcast live coverage from Spain’s Astrophysical Observatory of Javalambre while hosting a public event in León. NASA and the Italy-based Virtual Telescope Project will also provide live coverage.

“For me, it’s not just a scientific moment. It’s not just an incredible alignment of heavenly bodies. It’s also a very human moment,” said ESA Director of Science Carole Mundell. “It’s a real human connection between us with our feet planted on the Earth and the cosmos.”

ESA will use two of its space telescopes to study the Sun’s corona during the eclipse. Although the agency’s Proba-3 mission will not be ideally positioned for totality, it is expected to capture observations immediately before and after the event.

Meanwhile, NASA-supported university teams from the United States will launch more than 60 high-altitude research balloons from Spain and Iceland to investigate temporary changes in Earth’s atmosphere caused by the Moon’s shadow.

“A couple of minutes isn’t a lot of time, but it’s still plenty to affect the atmosphere and to make that cold, dark shadow of the moon on Earth,” said Montana State University’s Angela Des Jardins, who leads the NASA-funded balloon project.

Southwest Research Institute scientist Amir Caspi will conduct observations from a NASA research aircraft travelling at around 460 mph (740 km/h), allowing researchers to extend their observation time to nearly three minutes while capturing thousands of images of the Sun’s corona across nine different wavelengths.

“It’s true the eclipse is short, but it’s still incredibly valuable,” he said.

Spain Set for an Extraordinary Run of Eclipses

Astronomers are already looking ahead to an even more dramatic event.

On 2 August 2027, southern Spain will witness one of the longest total solar eclipses of the century, with totality lasting up to six minutes and 23 seconds before continuing across North Africa and the Middle East.

Spain’s remarkable sequence of eclipses will conclude on 26 January 2028 with an annular, or “ring of fire”, solar eclipse.

ESA’s Carole Mundell described the trio of events as “a lucky coincidence.”

The rarity is especially striking given that mainland Spain’s previous total solar eclipse occurred in 1912, with some astronomers considering 1905 to have been the country’s last fully spectacular total eclipse because the 1912 event was a hybrid eclipse that produced only a few seconds of totality in parts of Spain.

The Royal Observatory of Belgium’s Andrei Zhukov, whose Proba-3 mission has already produced more than 60 artificial eclipses using two precisely coordinated satellites, remains enthusiastic regardless of how eclipses occur.

“We’re looking forward to more eclipses,” Zhukov said, “natural or artificial.”
