The parents of a teenager who killed students in the United States have been sentenced to 10 years in prison

In a 2021 case at the high school, the mother, Jennifer Crumbley, and the father, James Crumbley, were convicted of involuntary manslaughter in two separate trials in February and March.

“Parents are not expected to be soothsayers, but these sentences do not punish bad parents. These sentences confirm repeated actions or lack of actions that could have prevented imminent disaster,” the judge said in court in Pontiac, Michigan. ), Cheryl Matthews.

The judge sentenced the parents to the same sentence of “ten to 15 years in prison,” minus the two-and-a-half years of pre-trial detention already served. They were sentenced to a maximum of 15 years in prison.

“Taking into account the impact of their gross negligence”, the lawyer asked that the accused be given the harshest punishment.

Before sentencing, both Jennifer Crumbley and James Crumbley made it clear that they would have acted differently if they had known the signs of the tragedy, contrary to the impression they gave during their respective trials.

Their son, Ethan Crumbley, killed a 15-year-old, two young girls between the ages of 14 and 17, and two young men, and injured six students and a teacher on November 30, 2021.

During the trial, Jennifer Crumbley testified that her husband had bought her a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol as a Christmas gift a few days earlier. He also said that he took his son to the shooting site the next day.

When the son was called to school on the day of the tragedy, his parents did not bring him home even though the teachers advised him to seek psychological counseling after discovering the frightening painting the teenager had drawn.

Ethan Crumbley was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison without parole in Oakland County Court in December.

The teenager pleaded guilty in October 2022 to bringing a gun with 50 rounds of ammunition to school and shooting the high school students.

In December, the mother of a six-year-old student who shot and seriously injured his teacher was sentenced to two years in prison for parental neglect by a Virginia District (Eastern) District Court.

Earlier this month, the father of a man accused of opening fire at a U.S. National Day celebration near Chicago, killing seven people, pleaded guilty to reckless conduct for helping buy the gun used in the shooting.
