Chris Holtman will get a three-year contract extension with Ohio State until the 2027-28 season

A new contract extension could keep Chris Holtman at Columbus for the next six seasons.

Pending final approval by the Board of Trustees, Ohio State’s head basketball coach receives a three-year contract extension that runs through the 2027-28 campaign. With five years under his belt already at Ohio State, Holtman will now be under contract for 11 seasons in total.

Holtman was a former contractor during the 2024-25 season, a deal he signed in 2017 that paid him $3 million annually in gross compensation. Under his new contract, Holtman will receive a $500,000 salary increase, bringing his total annual compensation to $3.5 million annually with a base salary of $1 million.

Holtman is 107-56 with the Buckeyes through his first 163 games at the helm, and if you include the 2019-20 season (which has been curtailed by COVID-19), all five of Ohio State’s teams would have made the NCAA debut of his Buckeye career. The only other Ohio State coach to appear in at least five consecutive NCAA championships was Holtman’s predecessor, Thad Mata, who went to seventh in a row from 2008-09 to 2014-15.

Ohio State achieved its highest-ranking NCAA Tournament under Holtman two seasons ago, when the Buckeyes finished second after reaching the Big Ten Tournament for the first time in eight years. However, Ohio State suffered a shock first-round Big Dance loss that year, and after losing a round of 32 last March, none of Holtmann’s Buckeye teams were able to make it past the second round of the NCAA Championship.

In his latest work performance reviewOhio State Athletic Director Gene Smith, who evaluated the 2020-2021 roster, said Holtman did an “exceptional job,” Smith said at a news conference. last February He was pleased with the whereabouts of the Buckeye basketball program.

I just love the teaching he’s doing…I feel really good about what he’s doing, and I feel good about recruiting him.”
