“I think it is very clear that both Sweden and Finland will apply to join NATO in the spring. I think this is the right thing to do,” he told a news conference in the capital, Cape Verde.
Swedes support the joining of the Finns and the Atlantic Alliance, within the ambit of the “Djuntu pa Igualdadi” (Together for Equality) project, by Darja Holonen, who works in Cape Verde at the call of the Cape Verdean Association for the Struggle against Gender-Based Violence.
“Sweden has a great tradition of being a non-aligned country like ours. It is true that we have coordinated peacekeeping work at the EU level and have worked with NATO on this issue. So far, given our national security policy, we do not think we need anything other than cooperation with NATO, ”he said.
“With the war in Ukraine now, the people of Finland and Sweden are practically convinced that we should join NATO,” said Dorja Holonen, a member of the World Leadership Alliance-Club in Madrid.
Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine on February 24 that killed more than 3,000 civilians, warning that the actual number could be much higher, according to the UN.
More than 13 million people were killed in the military offensive, more than 5.5 million of whom fled the country, according to the latest UN data.
The Russian invasion was generally condemned by the international community, which responded by sending arms to Ukraine and strengthening economic and political sanctions on Moscow.
