The UK’s ambitions to develop next-generation aviation technology have received another boost after British manufacturer Vertical Aerospace revealed growing government support for its electric aircraft programme. Alongside fresh public funding, the company says the Ministry of Defence has expressed interest in a military version of its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, while commercial passenger services remain on course for a planned 2029 launch.
Vertical Aerospace Secures Additional Government Backing
Vertical Aerospace has announced it will receive a further £10 million in UK government funding, bringing the total amount of public investment in the company to £48 million.
The announcement came as the Bristol-based aerospace firm showcased its latest prototype during the Farnborough International Airshow, one of the world’s leading aviation events held in Hampshire.
The funding is linked to the company’s plans to establish long-term aircraft and battery manufacturing facilities in the UK, reinforcing the government’s wider objective of supporting advanced aerospace innovation and high-value manufacturing.
Military Interest Grows in Hybrid Electric Aircraft
Ministry of Defence Examines Defence Applications
While Vertical Aerospace’s primary focus remains commercial passenger transport, the company says its technology is also attracting attention from the UK’s defence sector.
According to Vertical, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed interest in exploring military applications for the company’s eVTOL aircraft, including hybrid-electric and autonomous technologies.
Chief Executive Stuart Simpson said the hybrid-powered version offers capabilities that could appeal to defence planners.
“It leverages the commercial airframe, but with a different powertrain, which the military are very interested in.”
He added that features such as quiet take-off and landing, reduced heat signatures and the potential for flights of up to 1,000 miles could make the aircraft suitable for a range of defence missions.
Unlike the fully electric passenger model, the hybrid version combines electric propulsion with a gas turbine. Although this would generate carbon emissions, it would significantly increase operational range while reducing refuelling times compared with battery charging alone.
Passenger Flights Still Targeted for 2029
Certification Remains the Key Challenge
Vertical Aerospace intends to introduce commercial passenger flights using its Valo production aircraft in 2029, following a revised certification timetable announced earlier this month.
The aircraft is designed to carry four passengers and forms part of a new generation of electric air taxis that aim to provide quieter, lower-emission transport across cities and regional routes.
The company had originally hoped to enter service by 2025, but certification of entirely new aircraft designs has proved more complex than initially anticipated.
Simpson said the revised timeline had been agreed in consultation with regulators, including the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
He expressed confidence that the updated schedule remains achievable following ongoing discussions with both authorities.
Prototype Demonstrates Key Flight Milestone
Transition Between Conventional and Vertical Flight Successfully Shown
At the Farnborough Airshow, Vertical Aerospace completed the first public demonstration of its aircraft transitioning from conventional wing-borne flight into vertical flight.
During the display, the aircraft approached the runway in conventional flight before tilting four of its propellers upwards to hover and descend vertically, similar to a helicopter.
The successful demonstration marks another milestone in the company’s certification programme as it seeks regulatory approval for commercial operations.
Competition Intensifies in the eVTOL Sector
Vertical Aerospace is one of several manufacturers developing electric aircraft designed to transform short-distance air travel.
Its principal competitor is US-based Joby Aviation, which has already demonstrated flights between John F. Kennedy International Airport and Manhattan. Other companies developing similar aircraft include Archer Aviation, Eve Air Mobility, backed by Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, along with several Chinese manufacturers.
The sector has experienced significant financial pressures since investor enthusiasm cooled following the pandemic-era technology boom, with several developers struggling or ceasing operations.
Vertical Aerospace also faced financial difficulties in 2024 before undergoing restructuring that resulted in founder Stephen Fitzpatrick leaving the business. The company is now backed by US investor Jason Mudrick.
UK Manufacturing Plans Expand
Vertical Aerospace plans to manufacture approximately 150 aircraft annually at its existing facility in Kemble, Gloucestershire.
Looking further ahead, the company aims to establish a larger production site capable of building 1,000 aircraft each year, alongside battery pack assembly operations.
Producing aircraft domestically is also expected to simplify elements of the certification process while strengthening the UK’s aerospace supply chain.
Flying Taxi Costs Aimed to Match Conventional Cabs
The company believes its commercial air taxi service could eventually be priced competitively with traditional taxi journeys.
Vertical estimates that repeated short-distance flights using the same aircraft could allow fares comparable to a road taxi journey between London Heathrow Airport and central London, potentially making urban air travel more accessible if commercial operations proceed as planned.
As certification progresses and both civilian and defence interest grows, Vertical Aerospace is positioning itself at the forefront of the UK’s emerging electric aviation industry, with 2029 remaining the company’s target for launching passenger services.
