The Russian Federation proposed on Monday that the vote on the resolution condemning Russia in the United Nations General Assembly be held in secret. However, the proposal failed – but more so on the front of procedural rules than on the UN’s resolution on the conflict in Ukraine. It is fitting that India, which usually abstains from voting, voted against the Russian proposal.
A vote is a motion debated by member states in the General Assembly Condemning Russia for “illegal annexation” of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, followed by “Voting in Name Only”. The United States and Albania had already proposed last week a vote on the Security Council, which was rejected because Russia used its veto rights as a permanent member, Agence France-Presse explained.
The 193-member General Assembly will now vote.
