Italy’s worst drought in decades has reduced its largest lake to almost an all-time low.
Tourists who arrived at Lake Garda this weekend were greeted by stretches of previously submerged rock that extend far from the waterline.
“We came last year, loved it, and are back this year,” tourist Beatrice Massy She said sitting on the rocks. “We found that the landscape had changed a lot. We were a bit shocked when we arrived, because we were walking normally, and there was no water.”
Northern Italy hasn’t seen heavy rain in months, and this year snowfall has fallen by 70%, drying up important waterways.
