Vaude Norrsken – Best Buy

I’ve been very impressed with Vaude in the last few product tests and this mat is another excellent performer. It’s relatively thin and easy to inflate, but still warm, due to the PrimaLoft Infinity® that’s embedded inside the mat. I’ve yet to see an R-value for it but I’ve used it close to zero degrees without cold spots. It’s also very comfortable to lie on – slightly narrower than others here, but that makes it easier to fit inside a shelter. The baffles run head to toe, with two thicker ribs on the outside, so you’re in no danger of falling off. I did notice that the mat traps condensation from warm breath – probably as a result of that synthetic insulation inside – so be sure to air properly after your trip. The valve is very burly and of a click lock design. Not the warmest or lightest here, but a comfortable and secure feeling mat made under ‘fair wear’ conditions, and therefore sporting good environmental credentials. Packs down to the size of a 750ml bottle, weighs 664g.

VERDICT: Innovative, more environmentally friendly, very comfortable.

BEST FOR: 3 season mountain.
