The Light Hiker is a robust mix of merino wool and nylon with a little elastic on a roughly 60/40 basis, which I find a really practical mix for socks – the merino keeps the pong factor to a minimum and the synthetic means it dries a little faster than a 100% wool sock would do. Seams are nicely tucked away, the sock is mid height meaning it’ll work with either a trail shoe or a boot, and the wool helps regulate temperature in what is a medium thickness sock, despite the ‘light’ in the name. In the early summer they were a little warm but under normal UK conditions they are perfect. I’ve done the ‘backpacking test’ with these, and they remained fairly pleasant to the nose (!) and very comfortable to wear even by the 4th day without washing. As you’d hope, the wool here is responsibly farmed and comes minus the chlorine shrinkproofing that some merino is subjected to, and the nylon in the sock comes from recycled fishing nets. The brand also use boat rather than air freight and are Bluesign certified.
▶ Verdict: A practical and durable outdoors sock with a lower carbon footprint.
▶ Best for: All purpose, all activities.
