Salewa Ortles PTX Stretch Jacket

This narrowly missed last year’s Hardshell roundup but is definitely worth including here. The fabric is Powertex which uses a PFC free waterproofing treatment, with Cordura for improved abrasion resistance in high wear areas. All seams are welded, and the jacket has proved very waterproof in some decidedly Scottish conditions on test. There are some innovative design touches: It is beautifully cut, especially on the sleeves, which allows good movement, and there’s a zipped ‘gusset’ to control hood volume – unzip to wear over a helmet, zip up otherwise. The hood itself is adjustable and has a wired peak, offers plenty of shelter and moves with the head. There are two giant sized Napolean pockets (out of the way of harness and hipbelt) and a smaller inside chest pocket to keep phone or camera batteries warm. The main zipper is large-toothed, sturdy and backed with a rear baffle, and further ventilation is supplied – not by ‘pit-zips’ as such – but two long zips on the rear of each arm. I found these to work well and avoid snow ingress. The fit is ‘athletic’ but not tight – there’s still room under my medium for a puffy layer, but not so much that it catches the wind. All in all, this is a super stylish and very effective, mid-weight shell layer at about 480g
