The Avocet were bright, steady in the hand and very clear and sharp, and for this reason I think they are the best general purpose glasses on offer here outside of budgets at either end of the scale. They are nitrogen filled to reduce fogging, fully waterproof, have adjustable eyepieces and offer both course and fine focus controls. They come equipped with very robust rubber lens covers at both ends, and a simple but serviceable case. They were too big and heavy to carry on a backpack comfortably (had I not been testing them) but conversely that size and weight do mean a very steady picture. The narrower field of view was great for watching groundnesting birds and meant I could screen out clutter and distractions, but not quite as good for birds on the wing. Not quite as aesthetic a viewing experience as the Editor’s Choice here, but almost, and for a lot less money! Weight 650g.
▶ Best for: Birdwatching, day walks, the set to keep in the glove compartment.
▶ Verdict: Great value for a durable and high quality binocular.
