The most trainer-like boot in this roundup, the 325 is a very lightweight boot from the fell running experts at inov-8. Don’t be surprised, therefore, by a very flexible and bendy footbed, and lots of feedback underfoot. I spend most of my outdoor year in trainers so appreciate that responsiveness, but it can take a while to get used to. The sole is extremely grippy and it’s comfortable straight out of the box, but a narrow toebox means those who have wide feet should look for a half size up. The lacing system is simple but works well to wrap the boot around the ankle and I experienced no heel rise with these (whereas I do with the brand’s regular shoe-style trainers). GTX keeps the wet at bay and the fabric is thin so it’s a good choice for shoulder season walking and perhaps ultra-marathon style events. Weight 325g per shoe.
► Verdict: A boot that thinks like a trainer, designed for narrower feet.
► Best for: Lightweight backpacking and multiday running in spring and autumn.
