Probably my cold weather ‘gear of the year’, if you pair these insulated trousers with one of the winter jackets reviewed elsewhere in this issue, you’ll be set up for whatever the season ahead throws at you. Sigma uses Primaloft Gold insulation sandwiched between 2 layers of slippy, windproof and breathable ‘MX’ face fabric. There’s very little else here, in order to keep the weight to a frankly remarkable 220g – elasticated waist and ankles, and a small inner security pocket – so the Sigma are not tailored for walking or climbing. This is more ‘wear when stationary’ clothing. That said, I have insulated alpine pants that are 3 times the weight and less warm than these. For me, synthetic insulation is a better choice for trousers than down in most cold weather conditions, as they are much more likely to get damp at the knees, seat and ankles. These are insanely warm, disperse moisture rapidly and scrunch down tiny. Serious clobber for serious conditions, I am genuinely impressed.
