At 521g you’d expect the Diode to sit towards the warmer end of the market, and to achieve that OR has gone for a three-headed approach. Within the jacket you’ll find both standard Primaloft Gold (in the shoulders, hood and waist) with a 70 per cent goose down Primaloft Gold Down Blend in the rest – all wrapped up in Pertex Quantum. The result is something that sits in-between a deep winter down jacket and a more active mid-layer piece, while offering shower resistance too. Essentially it feels like ski-wear. Features are superb, from the six variously-sized pockets (one of which functions as a stuff sack) to the excellent wired-peak, helmet-compatible hood and adjustments at the hem and wrists, while the cut is close fitting yet pleasingly manoeuvrable for something so well-insulated. I did find that the wind penetrated at the front zip slightly, but otherwise it’s a very impressive insulation piece for winter adventures on the move, while straying into being an effective “at rest” piece too. Throw in the natty colour schemes and you’ve got a superb bit of kit.
