Initial impressions are of uncompromising durability, with 75D three layer Gore-Tex throughout. It feels stiff, like a suit of armour, and for winter, I find this reassuring. The design is simple, with the minimum of features, all done well: two external water resistant pockets on the torso, underarm zips for venting, and Mountain Equipment’s highly praised HC Hood. Admittedly I have a love-hate relationship with the hood, which is helmet compatible, easy to adjust, and has a broad conformable brim that stands up very well to wind and rain. The downside is the huge brim is cumbersome when the hood isn’t up. Nevertheless, it’s a well-designed winter shell at a great price. Weight is a solid but fair 505g.
VERDICT: Simple, reliable and well-designed waterproof for the harshest of conditions, superb value.
BEST FOR: Winter walking and mountaineering in any weather.
