The Quattro Fusion is a very new and very top-end release from Montane. Developed alongside sponsored big wall, cold-weather adventurer (and “Hull’s second best climber”) Andy Kirkpatrick, it’s a 472g insulated jacket which uses a four main materials to achieve high levels of flexibility, breathability and warmth retention. So, consider it if you’re an alpine climber, a ski-tourer or a mountaineer, perhaps think twice if you’re a Sussex rambler. The materials in question are Pertex Quantum and Pertex Quantum Pro Diamond Fuse (both essentially water resistant forms of nylon). The insulation comes in the form of water resistant HyperDRY goose down and a lining made mainly of synthetic Polartec Alpha Direct fleece. The result is impressive. Montane’s usual attention to detail is apparent (the hood adjusters and hard peak are particularly excellent) and the Alpha Direct pile adds a real touch of comfort and luxury. Ultimately its appeal is specific to high intensity, cold-weather pursuits, but in that application it’s warm, breathable and athletically judged.
VERDICT: An innovative mixture of fabrics in a specialist, top-end garment.
BEST FOR: Alpinists and ski tourers.
